MANUEL SCHROEDER “UNDER CONSTRUCTION & LE MOMENT SUPREME”

21.01. – 28.02.2016

Photography exhibition “under construction” & “le moment supreme” featuring images by German photographer Manuel Schroeder will be exhibited from 21st of January.
Works of  Manuel Schroeder search for clues, focusing on the everyday, the seemingly unspectacular.

This is a vivid representation of the urban life. Dr. Angela Wilms-Adrians, art historian from Germany, writes about the project “le moment supreme”: “It is the phenomenon of different qualities of perception that drives the artist Manuel Schroeder in his work. His main focus is the symbolic power of the seemingly self-evident. The project focuses on special places, whose meaning has changed in recent years. In appearance, they are still marked by their former function as well as by the time their characteristic design. The selected locations are atmospheric compressed by the tension of their past and present appearance. They provide inspiration and trigger associations. In the photographic work “le moment supreme” Manuel Schroeder is dealing with the reality of these places and works of expressions that match the volatility of our memories.”
The project “under construction”, presented at the European Month of Photography 2014 in Berlin, is based on social photography:
“Europe appears as a great vision that is difficult to comprehend in an abstract or individual way. Places that once testified to Europe’s cultural and economic growth present themselves today as sites of soullessness in a bleak ‘concrete aesthetic’ that are characterised by cultural absence. The imaginary ideals of politics, advertising, and propaganda have lost their substance. With a flair for details, Manuel Schroeder ostensibly documentary style captures the social realities in a narrative, undogmatic, systematic manner. The photographs juxtapose the parallel worlds of Latvia’s post-socialist housing estates with Germany’s urban housing projects. Against the background of such large-scale architecture, a human being can seem insignificant and lost. But our basic need for culture turns out to be an effective agent of change: individual arrangements and improvised creations break through the dreariness of the given order. Europe is a construction site – without beginning, without end.”
Manuel Schroeder (1962) is a professional photographer, multi-media artist, musician and teacher of photography who works in Germany, East-Europe and USA. Since 1994, he takes part in solo and group exhibitions. His artworks are included in private and public art collections; video & sound installations are exhibited in urban spaces.
